Definition of Purpose

Steven Covey wrought a great book called The 8th Habit.  In it he gives a definition of purpose like this, “When you’re engaged in a task that is fueled by passion, that utilizes your talents and rises out of a great need in the world, that you feel called to meet, therein lies your authentic voice.”

I like that definition because it covers the 4 steps to discovering your purpose:

*      Role

*      Passion

*      Talents

*      Needs

Role is whatever you’re doing.  For some it’s a job, for others it’s a hobby, for others it’s volunteer work.

Passions are those things that make your heart beat.  They excite and inspire you.  Passions are different for everyone.  So you’re passions are one of the things that make you unique.

Talents are those things that you do better than everyone else.  We’ve all been created with specific gifts and talents, unfortunately statistics show that only 2 out of 10 people use their talents on a daily basis.  So your talents are your secret weapons to make a difference in this world!

Needs are any problems that need solving!  Something as big as world peace and as small as cleaning a kitchen.  If someone has a problem they are looking for a solution and you can be that solution.

As you find a specific role that you’re passionate about and use your talents to become a solution to problems you will find you are living your purpose.  You’ll find that you feel fulfilled on a regular basis.  You’ll find that you’re making a difference in the world because you’re solving people’s problems.
