In my last article on “Why goal setting doesn’t work” I talked about the reason goal setting doesn’t usually work is because you set goals from the tiny percentage of your brain where you make logical choices. And to truly achieve your goals you need to get your goal, or vision, locked into your sub-conscious mind that controls your actions without you thinking about it.

So today I want to share with you how you might go about actually doing this.

The main key is to turn on your reticular activating system (what?!).

The RAS is a mechanism in your brain that filters through the crazy amounts of information that is in your environment and tells you what is relevant to you at the time according to the priority system your brain has set up.

For example…have you ever noticed that when you want to buy a gadget say an iphone, or new TV, you start to notice the people that have what you want.

Or when you want to buy a car you suddenly begin seeing that car everywhere!

The reason this happens is because you have told your RAS that this phone or this car is important and therefore needs to be noticed. It isn’t that those cars weren’t driving around before or people never had that phone. It’s just that your RAS wasn’t turned on to that so you never noticed it before.

So what does this have to do with Goal Setting?

Everything!

If you can program your RAS to be turned on to the resources you need to accomplish/finish your goal. You’re halfway there to actually being someone who lives out their dreams.

During my research on Goal Setting and success I ran across an interesting statistic.

The place in our brain that allows us to choose things, ie Goals, really only occupies 4-6 percent of our brain activity.

The other 94 percent of brain activity controls what we do on a sub conscious level. Meaning we just do this stuff without even thinking about it. For example, breathing. The entire time you have spend reading this article so far you probably haven’t had to decide when and how long to breathe. You just did it!

Now….goal setting has to do with that 4% of brain activity. You choose to set a goal. You decide this is something important for you to do.

And if you neglect the other 96% of brain activity you probably won’t ever actually accomplish those goals.

Because you haven’t implanted that goal as a priority in the 96% of your brain. And until that goal is seen as something your something your sub-conscious brain needs to be guiding you to do. You won’t do it!

Unless, of course, you have crazy will power (which some of you have…). The other people who have quit their workout regimen by Valentines Day in February know what I’m talking about.

You set goals that are important to you…..you just don’t ever do them.

So in this series I’m going to talk about Goal Setting and how to get your goals into that place in your brain so you actually live your goals out!

In the town where I grew up there was a prestigious school on the top of a mountain. Everyday as I drove to my school at the bottom of the mountain, I would look up at this sprawling campus and wish that I could go there. It was the one thing that I would pray for every night before I went to bed. I wanted to go to that school one day. To make a long story short, I got my wish. I worked and studied hard, received recommendations from my instructors and aced the entrance exams. In many ways the Tips to Find My Purpose were discovered when I accomplished this goal so many years ago. Whether we are trying to get an education, start a business or raise a family, we are all climbing a mountain. Some people are going around and around the base of the mountain with no idea where they are going. Some people have begun the ascent wondering whether or not they are climbing the right mountain at all. Some people do not even have the right equipment for the mountain they are trying to climb. One thing is certain, in order to climb the mountain successfully, you will need to use these tips to find my purpose to get to the top.

Finding Your Mountain – Your Calling
Somewhere on the plains of your life, there is a mountain with great appeal and allure. You are drawn to it. It speaks to you. This mountain is the area in life that gets you excited. Maybe you love to play video games and want to design them. This would be considered Entertainment. Maybe you are a terrific basketball player and want to coach a team. This is Sports. Or you may want to be a great mother and raise your children with excellence. This is Family. There is something in your life that ignites a fire in you. This is your calling.

Assessing Your Equipment – Your Talents and Strengths
Once you’ve found your calling, you have to take a good look at your equipment. What are your strengths? What are you great at doing? Sometimes your strengths are very subtle because you do them with such ease that you barely take notice of them. So, what do you do that is almost effortless to you but that others wish they could do like you? You may be very organized, you may have a good grasp on mathematics, you may be very athletic or be creative and artistic. These are strengths. You will need to use all your strengths, gifts and talents if you want to climb to the top of your mountain. It would be ridiculous to try to hike in a pair of high heel shoes. It would equally ridiculous to try to be a figure skater if you are uncoordinated and clumsy or a landscaper if you’re allergic to pollen. Use your equipment!

Learning the Terrain – Solving Problems
Every mountain is different. It has features unique to it. The area you’re called to has it’s own specific needs. On your mountain and with your equipment, there is a specific pathway to the top for you. Mother Teresa climbed to the top of the religious mountain because she saw the needs of the people and met them. Donald Trump climbed to the top of the business mountain because he realized that people needed real estate. In order to climb the mountain, you need to be a problem solver.

Hopefully, you are well on your way to answering the question: What are the tips to find my purpose? When you find a calling that utilizes your talents and strengths to solve the problems within the area in which you were called, you will have found your purpose.

Have you ever woke up in the morning and asked yourself “What am I here for? What is my purpose?” What am I even doing with my life?

If you do…you’re like a lot of people in this world and I’m here to tell you what your Purpose is!

Just Kidding…no one, except God himself, can tell you what your purpose is but you can look at some things that will give you clues to what you are on this planet for.

Specifically there are four things to look at.

Here’s my definition of Purpose:

When you find a role where you do what you love to do and use what you’re great at doing to become a solution to problems you feel called to fix. That’s where you’ll your purpose.

So those 4 things are:

Passions

Strengths

Needs

Calling

If you can find where these 4 things intersect you will find your purpose.

So you should be really asking:

What am I passionate about?

What do I do greatly all the time?

What problems are there out there that I notice need fixing?

What do I feel compelled to do?

And if you can find a role where those 4 things are intersecting you have found your sweet spot. The exact place you have been designed to make a huge difference in this world with the least amount of effort!

Many Blessings on Your Journey,

We’re going to figure out how you can effectively avoid these weaknesses so you can concentrate on your strengths (the things that strengthen you and therefore cause you to feel fulfilled).

I recommend trying these 4 strategies to deal with your weaknesses:

Just stop doing the activity and see if anyone even notices that you aren’t doing it anymore.

Team up with someone who loves doing the activity that weakens you.

Offer up one of your strengths, and bit by bit steer you life toward this strength and away from this weakness

Or maybe try and see this weakness from a different perspective.

Use these 4 strategies to take those weaknesses, and instead of letting them drain you, use them for good!

Knowing your personal strengths and building your life around them is crucial for success, fulfillment, contribution, and whatever it is you want to do with your life.

A strength is really three things working together:

Talents- those things you just naturally do well like empathy, competitiveness and learning

Knowledge- facts and lessons learned such as which dosage is correct for a particular patient

Skills- knowing the exact steps involved in giving someone an injection.

For example, these 3 things working together might be the talent of empathy, the skill of giving someone a good injection, and the knowledge of the right dosage to give the patient, creates the “strength” of “giving people injections that seem painless to the patient.”

When you are in your mother’s womb you begin to create brain cells called Neurons. By the time that creative explosion is done you have created nearly 100 Billion Neurons. Then these Neurons begin trying to communicate with each other so they reach out little arms called axons trying to make a connection. When they do make that connection it creates what’s called a synapse. Each of your 100 Billion neurons creates 15,000 synaptic connections. As you grow you some of these connections are neglected and start to break. In between the age of 3 and 15 you lost literally billions of these connections. By the time you wake up on your 16th birthday half of your entire network is gone! What’s left are some strong thick connections that we would recognize as your strengths. Your success depends on how well you capitalize on those strong synaptic connections.

One you discover your strengths you then need to add some skills to become better at those strengths. A professional speaker might learn how to create power-points or videos. Skills that, when learned, will make his speaking even better.

Then as he speaks to more and more people he gains knowledge of what makes a good speaker. He might understand the dynamics of the crowd better or he might gain knowledge of what it’s like when people aren’t listening. Then he can use that knowledge to change his style to better suit his audience.

So as you begin to understand your personal talents begin building your life around them by gaining knowledge and acquiring skills to grow this talent into a Strength!

A life purpose coach is one who instructs, prepares, trains and advises individuals on the reason for which something exists so that one’s life can be lived with passion and intentionality. Simply put, a life purpose coach helps people to find the aim and intent of their lives. And while it may be simply put, the task of finding the purpose behind your life is often not without its difficulties. Fortunately, there are many websites and books dedicated to this very subject. Unfortunately, there are so many websites and books dedicated to this subject that the task of finding your life’s purpose can be quite daunting. Here are some questions you may want to ask before you sign up and sign on with your life purpose coach:

Are you living your life’s purpose? You may want to do a background check on your life purpose coach. Does this person have their act together or are they selling something they haven’t bought themselves?

What are you really selling? Some of these websites and books are aimed at getting you to join their religion or buy into their beliefs. Different religions will approach the subject of life’s purposes through the lens of their religion.

How long will it take? Be weary of anything that is too complicated. Finding your purpose should be easy if done correctly. Some programs walk you through a process of discovery that only takes a few weeks to complete.

How much does it cost? There are some programs that are relatively inexpensive. Inexpensive programs are not necessarily worse and may actually provide you with better services for the amount charged.

The road to finding your life’s purpose does not have to be one lined with anxiety and complication. By getting answers to these questions, you will be well on your way to living a life filled with passion and intentionality.

I was talking with one of my friends who had recently changed jobs. I asked her if she liked her new job and this was her response:

“It’s a job….”

You can’t catch the tone of voice or the expression that she had when she said this but it was as if the very idea of job meant pain.

Is this true? Should you be satisfied in your job or should you just suck it up and work?

For me, your job should be a place where you utilize your strengths to become a solution to problems. The bigger the problem you solve; the more money you make. And since a life built around your strengths actually leaves you feeling fulfilled.

Yes…you should feel satisfied by your job!!!

The only thing you do more of during your week is sleep! So if your job is making you miserable then it is going to leak into the rest of your life.

So how do you find satisfaction in your job?

I think the first thing you need to do is find out your personal strengths. When I help people discover their personal strengths I use an online assessment that nearly 3 million people have used. When you’re done taking this 30 minute assessment it provides you with your 5 signature strengths.

Then I help them discover where they actually utilize these strengths at their job.

After that we try to figure out ways to steer their job towards those strengths on a daily basis.

So…if you’d like to take this first step to find out how you can be satisfied in your job. Click here and get a free CD that teaches you the 4 step process for doing just this.

To some goal setting is a joke. To others it’s the bread and butter to a successful life and still others set goals but never actually do anything about them. So where are you when it comes to goal setting?

An ancient proverb says “without a vision, people perish.” Which means that without a compelling vision people have no reason to live.

Another word for vision is goal. Do you have a compelling goal you are trying to accomplish? Do you have a reason to live?

If we get down to the root of what we do, we’ll see that everything we do is either to pursue pleasure or avoid pain.

A compelling goal, when accomplished, will feel great. You’ll feel fulfilled. So if you imagine a goal being fulfilled and it doesn’t inspire you, it doesn’t give you that sense of excitement, then you haven’t found a great goal yet.

This is extremely important because as you work on achieving your goal you will encounter problems on the way. It’s guaranteed! And it’s really easy to quit on your goals when you encounter a little bit of opposition when you don’t have a goal that would feel great to accomplish. Your goal has to give you a greater sense of pleasure than the degree of pain in the opposition. If it doesn’t your goals will be much harder to accomplish.

Once you have an inspiring vision. I recommend taking that vision and breaking it down into bite sized bits. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!

So…take your goal and ask yourself “what has to happen before this to make this happen?” And once you have that figured out, ask yourself “what has to happen before that to make that happen?” And keep doing this until you have your goal broken down into small steps.

Then focus all your energy on that first step, no matter how small it is. When you have accomplished that focus all your energy on the next step, so on and so forth until you have accomplished your goal.

This is the system I use to accomplish my goals on a regular basis.

If you want to learn how to define purpose you need to identify the essential qualities of a purpose filled life.

Do you know anyone who is living their purpose? What is their life like? What do they spend their time doing? Do they balance the different areas of their life well, i.e. work life, family life, etc…? Or do they focus on just one thing, like a workaholic?

I guarantee you that every person’s purpose is different but the essential qualities of a purpose filled life are always the same.

Those qualities are balance, fulfillment & talents.

A person who is living their purpose always lives a life of balance. They have a specific purpose and that purpose drives them but it never completely consumes them. You have 24 hours a day and probably sleep about 8 of those hours. So the 16 hours a day you’re awake what are you doing? A workaholic is probably working 10-12 hours a day which leaves about 4 hours a day for the other important aspects of his life, like his family & his health. A person who is living their purpose balances all aspects of their life.

Fulfillment is a result of doing the things you are passionate about, the things you believe truly matter. If you’re lacking fulfillment in your life it’s because you’re spending most of your time doing things that don’t line up with your passions. Passion is the fuel for your life. When you’re involved in something you’re passionate about it will wake you up in the morning faster than Starbucks!

Talents are an essential quality to purpose because this is where you are hard-wired to excel at. Talents are those things that others wish they could do like you but you think they’re crazy because it comes so easily for you. People that are living their purpose have found a role where they can utilize those talents on a regular basis.

If you can discover these things in your own life you can begin to define your life purpose.
