Goal Setting

To some goal setting is a joke.  To others it’s the bread and butter to a successful life and still others set goals but never actually do anything about them.  So where are you when it comes to goal setting?

An ancient proverb says “without a vision, people perish.”  Which means that without a compelling vision people have no reason to live.

Another word for vision is goal.  Do you have a compelling goal you are trying to accomplish?  Do you have a reason to live?

If we get down to the root of what we do, we’ll see that everything we do is either to pursue pleasure or avoid pain.

A compelling goal, when accomplished, will feel great.  You’ll feel fulfilled.  So if you imagine a goal being fulfilled and it doesn’t inspire you, it doesn’t give you that sense of excitement, then you haven’t found a great goal yet.

This is extremely important because as you work on achieving your goal you will encounter problems on the way.  It’s guaranteed!  And it’s really easy to quit on your goals when you encounter a little bit of opposition when you don’t have a goal that would feel great to accomplish.  Your goal has to give you a greater sense of pleasure than the degree of pain in the opposition.  If it doesn’t your goals will be much harder to accomplish.

Once you have an inspiring vision.  I recommend taking that vision and breaking it down into bite sized bits.  How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time!

So…take your goal and ask yourself “what has to happen before this to make this happen?”  And once you have that figured out, ask yourself “what has to happen before that to make that happen?”  And keep doing this until you have your goal broken down into small steps.

Then focus all your energy on that first step, no matter how small it is.  When you have accomplished that focus all your energy on the next step, so on and so forth until you have accomplished your goal.

This is the system I use to accomplish my goals on a regular basis.
