Personal Strengths

Knowing your personal strengths and building your life around them is crucial for success, fulfillment, contribution, and whatever it is you want to do with your life.

A strength is really three things working together:

Talents- those things you just naturally do well like empathy, competitiveness and learning

Knowledge- facts and lessons learned such as which dosage is correct for a particular patient

Skills- knowing the exact steps involved in giving someone an injection.

For example, these 3 things working together might be the talent of empathy, the skill of giving someone a good injection, and the knowledge of the right dosage to give the patient, creates the “strength” of “giving people injections that seem painless to the patient.”

When you are in your mother’s womb you begin to create brain cells called Neurons.  By the time that creative explosion is done you have created nearly 100 Billion Neurons.  Then these Neurons begin trying to communicate with each other so they reach out little arms called axons trying to make a connection.  When they do make that connection it creates what’s called a synapse.  Each of your 100 Billion neurons creates 15,000 synaptic connections.  As you grow you some of these connections are neglected and start to break.  In between the age of 3 and 15 you lost literally billions of these connections.  By the time you wake up on your 16th birthday half of your entire network is gone!  What’s left are some strong thick connections that we would recognize as your strengths.  Your success depends on how well you capitalize on those strong synaptic connections.

One you discover your strengths you then need to add some skills to become better at those strengths.  A professional speaker might learn how to create power-points or videos.  Skills that, when learned, will make his speaking even better.

Then as he speaks to more and more people he gains knowledge of what makes a good speaker.  He might understand the dynamics of the crowd better or he might gain knowledge of what it’s like when people aren’t listening.  Then he can use that knowledge to change his style to better suit his audience.

So as you begin to understand your personal talents begin building your life around them by gaining knowledge and acquiring skills to grow this talent into a Strength!
